Ik weet dat het nog maar oktober is, maar toch: de kerstdagen komen er echt al heel snel aan! En het is een goed idee om nu alvast rond te kijken naar kleine cadeautjes en kaarten, zodat je ze op tijd in huis zult hebben. En is die voorpret eigenlijk niet het allerleukste van de feestdagen?

Ik heb zelfs al een van mijn kerstitems in mijn Etsy shop verkocht, deze kerstkaart!
En het is meer dan een kerstkaart... wanneer je de kaart op een bepaalde manier vouwt, dan verandert hij in een prachtig en sfeervol papieren lantaarntje! Te koop in mijn shop!
Als je deze kaart verstuurt naar iemand, stuur je hem of haar echt een speciaal cadeautje. De kaart/lantaarn is helemaal handgemaakt door mijzelf. Het papiersnijwerk met de hand kost best wat tijd om te maken, dus als je de kaart koopt, weet je dat je echt een uniek product in handen hebt. Koop het als een presentje voor een speciaal iemand, of geef het aan jezelf: de kaart houdt zijn waarde omdat je het elk jaar weer kunt gebruiken als sfeerlichtje.

Piet Zwart - a Dutch Designer with 100 talents

I'm currently joining a design competition about Piet Zwart, I had to design a film poster for a documentary about this Dutch Designer. I earlier posted an article about that.
I would like to show you some more things about Piet Zwart. Whether you like his work or not - the things he did in his time (1885-1977) are interesting to see. And the more you read about it, the more interesting it gets. Said enough - just look at some pictures I made of the monograph about Piet Zwart!

Here are two designs for pieces of furniture that Piet Zwart made. These chair designs are from 1919 and 1920. Since I saw these fine line drawings yesterday, I see my own poster design from a different perspective!

Piet Zwart - een Nederlandse ontwerper met 100 talenten
Ik doe op dit moment mee aan een ontwerpwedstrijd over Piet Zwart. De opdracht was een filmaffiche te ontwerpen voor een documentaire over zijn werk. Lees ook mijn vorige artikel daarover.
Ik zou je graag nog wat meer laten zien van het werk van Piet Zwart. Of je er nou van houdt of niet - gezien de tijd waarin hij leefde (1885-1977) is het ontzettend interessant, en hoe meer je erover weet hoe boeiender het wordt. Genoeg gepraat, kijk vooral naar de foto's hierboven uit de monografie over Piet Zwart!

Halverwege mijn bericht zie je de foto van twee tekeningen die Piet Zwart maakte, allebei stoelontwerpen. Deze meubelontwerpen zijn van 1919 en 1920. Sinds ik deze tekeningen gisteren tegenkwam in het boek, zag ik ineens mijn eigen afficheontwerp in een ander licht! Bekijk mijn affiche maar eens, de letters zijn heel fijn getekende lijnen met pen op papier gezet. In de meubelontwerpen van Piet Zwart zie je ook die verfijning in de lijntekeningen terug. Bijzonder!

P.S. Kijk ook nog even naar de tekeningen van de dansers hierboven. Vind je ook niet dat het er heel modern uitziet? De tekeningen zijn uit 1920!

Poster competition Dutch Design: Piet Zwart

This is the poster I designed for a documentary about Piet Zwart: Alles Moet Nieuw (Everything must change).

My entry in the competition.

Do you know Piet Zwart? He was a famous Dutch photographer, typographer, architect and industrial designer. Piet Zwart (1885 - 1977) influenced a lot of present-day designers and was awarded "Designer of the 20th Century" by the association of Dutch Designers. His work is now collected by museums, and a documentary has been made about his ideas about design in the era he lived in.

Of course a documentary needs a film poster. So for this film (made by Sherman de Jesus), a poster design competition was organised for graphic designers in the Netherlands. All entries can now be seen online, including my entry!

About my design: I was inspired by a word Piet Zwart invented for himself: "typotect", a contraction of typographer and architect, which symbolised his background with both disciplines. With that word "typotect" in mind, I started to sketch and draw letters, playing with typography and space.

The posters that have the most points, will be exhibited in the Museum Of The Image, in Breda, the Netherlands. There will also be a jury prize, and that poster will be used as the real publicity poster!

Affichewedstrijd: Piet Zwart - Alles Moet Nieuw

Bovenaan zie je het affiche dat ik heb ontworpen voor de film Alles Moet Nieuw - Piet Zwart. Ken je Piet Zwart? In zijn tijd was Piet Zwart (1885-1977) een grote vernieuwer en zeer vooruitstrevend. Piet Zwart was binnenhuisarchitect, industrieel vormgever, reclametypograaf, fotograaf, criticus en docent en bereidde de weg voor wat tegenwoordig bekend staat als Dutch Design. Hij speelde een belangrijke rol in het Nederlandse ontwerpklimaat van de twintigste eeuw. Vakgenoten riepen hem dan ook postuum uit tot Ontwerper van de Twintigste Eeuw.

Binnenkort zal er in geselecteerde filmzalen een nieuwe documentaire te zien zijn over Piet Zwart. Voor deze film werd een wedstrijd uitgeschreven om het filmaffiche te ontwerpen. Alle inzendingen zijn nu op de website te bekijken, inclusief mijn ontwerp! 

Voor het ontwerp van mijn affiche heb ik me op geheel eigen wijze laten inspireren door de benaming die Piet Zwart voor zichzelf in het leven riep: 'typotekt', een samentrekking van typograaf en architect. Vanuit die gedachte ben ik handmatig letters gaan tekenen, spelend met typografie en ruimtelijkheid.

De affiches met de meeste stemmen krijgen een expositie in het MOTI in Breda (ook wel bekend als Graphic Design Museum). Er is ook een juryprijs, het affiche dat van de jury wint wordt daadwerkelijk gebruikt als hèt filmaffiche en wordt gebruikt voor alle publicitaire uitingen.

My favourite books - part 1

I'm going to share with you some of my favourite books from the field of art & design. 

Part 1: ABC3D by Marion Bataille

Marion Bataille is a very talented illustrator and graphic designer. In 2008 she published the book ABC3D, a wonderful pop-up book with the complete alphabet. It makes a great gift for everyone, young and old. I think most of you know this book because of the video on youtube that has been watched by over 2 millions of people, but if you don't know what I'm talking about: it's a must-see!

As soon as I saw this video, I was hooked. I bought the book and I love it. I made some pictures of my favourite letters:

Mijn favoriete boeken - deel 1

Deel 1: ABC3d van Marion Bataille

Marion Bataille is een getalenteerde illustratrice en grafisch ontwerper. In 2008 maakte zij het boek ABC3D, een wonderbaarlijk pop-up boek waarin zij alle letters van het alfabet verwerkt heeft. Ik denk dat veel van jullie dit geweldige boek al kennen van het Youtube-filmpje wat een hit is geworden met meer dan 2 miljoen kijkers. Maar als je geen idee hebt waar dit over gaat, kijk vooral het filmpje bovenaan dit bericht! Je moet het gezien hebben.
Zodra ik het filmpje zag, wist ik wat ik moest doen: het boek kopen! Hier zie je de foto's die ik heb gemaakt van mijn favoriete letters. Het is echt een goede cadeautip, voor jong tot oud.

Marion Bataille heeft onlangs ook weer een nieuw boek gemaakt, over (je raadt het al...?) cijfers. Hierboven zie je het filmpje.

The story behind... my typographic series

My series of 3 typographic items on Etsy is complete! They're all for sale in my shop at the moment. Wondering about the origin of this series?

I like to play with typography, language and structures. And I always wanted to have a series of paper goods with a clean look, using modern typography, what I never see in conventional stores. So why shouldn't I create that myself? The idea of this spatial type came when I was designing a poster about an architect (that's why the letters look like they're built up to a three-dimensional form). The letters are composed with multiple outlines in two tones (every design uses another colour combination), piled until it forms a light spatial image. The words on the covers speak for themselves and are my poetic interpretation of what could be inside the book when you use it...

Het verhaal achter mijn typografische serie
Mijn serie van 3 producten met letters op de voorkant is compleet! Ze zijn nu alledrie te koop in mijn Etsy-shop. Benieuwd naar hoe deze serie is ontstaan?

Als ontwerper vind ik het leuk om te spelen met typografie (het vormgeven van letters en tekst), taal, en structuren. En waar ik altijd naar zocht, waren notitieboekjes en andere papieren producten met een mooi helder en modern typografisch ontwerp, maar zoiets kon ik nooit vinden bij de boekhandel. Dus waarom zou ik het niet gewoon zelf maken? Het idee voor deze letters ontstond bij het ontwerpen van een poster over een architect (vandaar de ruimtelijke opbouw van de letters). De letters zijn samengesteld uit meerdere contouren met steeds afwisselende kleuren: 2 kleuren per ontwerp, en elk product heeft een andere kleurencombi. De woorden op de omslag spreken voor zich en zijn mijn poëtische interpretatie van wat je in het boekje zou kunnen schrijven of maken...

Zoals je op de foto's kunt zien kostte het me heel wat tests en kleurproeven voordat het ontwerp precies klopte en ik de juiste kleuren had! Kijk maar eens goed naar de laatste foto, dan zie je dat rood en groen samen bruin maken. En geel en blauw... precies: groen.
