One Color Rainbow

I would like to introduce this new shop to you: One Color Rainbow, founded by a good friend of mine, Sofie van Schadewijk. She's a freelance illustrative designer and makes wonderful drawings. What I love about her work is her imagination and how she creates her own world through illustrations. Take a look!

Sofie's illustrations have a lot of beautiful little details. She works only with black and white, and because of that she manages to create a very sophisticated image. Her one color drawings offer a great range of shapes, lines and textures: a one color rainbow!

Ik wil jullie graag kennis laten maken met een nieuwe online winkel: One Color Rainbow, opgericht door een goede vriendin van mij, Sofie van Schadewijk. Ze is freelance illustratief ontwerper en maakt heel bijzondere tekeningen. Wat ik bewonder in haar werk is haar grote verbeeldingskracht en hoe ze in haar illustraties een eigen wereld creëert. One Color Rainbow heeft een winkel op Etsy, waar Sofie haar eigen ontwerpen verkoopt: prachtige producten (t-shirts voor zowel mannen als vrouwen, en tassen) die handmatig zijn gezeefdrukt.

Sofie's illustraties zijn rijk aan details. Ze werkt alleen met zwart en wit, waardoor haar werk een stijlvolle en verfijnde uitstraling krijgt. Haar tekeningen hebben een groot palet aan structuren, lijnen en vormen, vandaar: One Color Rainbow!

Ik heb 3 verschillende ontwerpen gemaakt, en ze zijn niet gezeefdrukt, maar helemaal met de hand beschilderd/getekend!

Blooming greeting cards: send a green message!

What happens when you send someone a greeting card? Will he or she read the message on the card, and then throw it away...? Not with these cards!

These cards, with a print of my watercolour illustrations, are printed on paper with flower seeds in it. You can write a message on the paper and send it like a normal card. But there's more: you can put the card in a flowerpot with soil, and something nice will bloom! Isn't that a wonderful gesture to someone: a green message that comes alive!

How does it work? Put the paper in a flowerpot with soil, or in the earth in the garden. Cover the paper with some soil, and moisten it every day. Depending on circumstances and season, the seeds will start germinating after about a week.

Of course I tested it myself. The first little white flowers are showing! Here are the pictures:

Send a flowering message!

Wat gebeurt er meestal als je iemand een wenskaart stuurt? Diegene leest je berichtje, en gooit de kaart niet lang daarna weg... Maar niet met deze kaarten!

Deze wenskaarten, met een door mij gemaakte illustratie, zijn gedrukt op papier met zaadjes erin. Je kunt gewoon je groeten erin schrijven, en de kaart versturen, zoals je anders ook zou doen. Maar dan is het nog niet klaar! De ontvanger kan de kaart in een bloempotje doen, en dan bloeit er zomaar iets moois op! Is dat geen mooi gebaar naar iemand?

Hoe werkt het? (Zie het stripje hierboven.) 
Doe het papier in een bloempot met aarde. Maak het elke dag vochtig. Afhankelijk van het seizoen en de omstandigheden, komen er na een week al kleine plantjes op. Natuurlijk heb ik het zelf getest. De groene plantjes zijn al aardig groot, en er komen nu zelfs kleine witte bloemetjes tevoorschijn!

Inspired by an English coast village

I made a series of greeting cards, with illustrations of houses. (buy them here)

During a trip around the coast of Kent, England, I really got inspired by the atmosphere of these villages near the sea. There's something special with the light, the style of the cottages and of course the beautiful landscape. I made a lot of pictures to capture the light of the sea, and remember the colours of the walls and the doors.

This resulted in a series of three greeting cards, with illustrations of the English coast houses. 
I wanted these illustrations to reflect the atmosphere of the villages with their small streets. I made these illustrations by hand, using black drawing pens. That way I could emphasize the character of the houses, with all those tiny details like flower pots, different types of doors, drainpipes, little tiles, windows and street lights, that all together make the houses unique. I had a lot of fun drawing this! Not only the building style, but also the colours were fascinating for me. Do you see the pastel candy colours on the picture above? I scanned my handmade illustrations, and digitally coloured the prints. I only added some subtle colours to give it that clean atmosphere. The cards are all printed on heavy card stock, and come with a recycled envelope.

Ik heb een serie wenskaarten ontworpen, met illustraties van Engelse huisjes. (hier te koop) 
Meer weten over het verhaal achter mijn werk?
Tijdens een tripje naar de kust van Kent, in Engeland, raakte ik geïnspireerd door de sfeer in de dorpjes vlakbij zee. Er is iets bijzonders mee, door het licht, de typische huizen en natuurlijk het mooie landschap. Ik maakte een heleboel foto's om het zeelicht vast te leggen, en te onthouden hoe de kleurige gevels eruit zagen. 

Dit leidde uiteindelijk tot een serie kaarten, met illustraties van deze Engelse huisjes. Ik wilde dat deze kaarten precies de sfeer zouden weergeven van het leven in deze dorpjes vlakbij zee, met z'n smalle straatjes. Ik maakte de tekeningen met de hand, met een zwarte tekenpen. Op die manier kon ik goed het karakter van de huisjes laten zien, met alle betekenisvolle details zoals bloempotjes, vensterbanken, ruitjes en raampjes, de straat, de regenpijpen en de straatlantaarns. Elk huisje werd zo uniek. Dat was erg leuk om te tekenen!

Niet alleen de bouwstijl, maar ook de kleuren waren voor mij interessant als ontwerper. Veel gevels waren in pastelkleuren geschilderd, bijna als snoepjes. De tekeningen heb ik daarom ingescand en digitaal gekleurd, waarbij ik alleen een paar vlakken een kleur meegaf voor een subtiel effect. De drie kaarten zijn gedrukt op extra zwaar papier, dus lekker stevig om in te schrijven, en je krijgt er een mooie gerecyclede envelop bij.

Inspiring: The Morran book project

I just discovered this great project, and wanted to share it with you!

The Morran Book Project, 160 pages by www.studiomorran.com

This book project was started by the wonderful illustrator and artist Camilla Engman. She had a little dog named Morran, and in this book illustrators from all around the world contributed by making portraits inspired by the dog. You should really see it! It's a wonderful book! The good thing is: you can browse through the book online (see above), and see all the great pages, but you can also buy it.
(Profit goes to the World Society for the Protection of Animals.)

Unfortunately Morran past away. But I'm sure this book is a great tribute to her!

Inspirerend: The Morran Book Project
Ik ontdek net dit geweldige project, en wil het graag met jullie delen. Dit boekenproject is opgestart door de bijzonder getalenteerde illustratrice en kunstenares Camilla Engman. Zij blogde vaak over haar hondje Morran, en omdat deze hond een steeds belangrijkere plek innam in haar werk, besloot ze als eerbetoon een bijzonder project op te starten: een boek waarvoor illustratoren van over de hele wereld tekeningen van de hond Morran maakten. Het is een prachtig en inspirerend boek geworden, en het mooie is: je kunt hem gewoon online bekijken (zie bovenaan dit bericht) of je kunt het boek kopen (waarbij de winst naar een goed doel gaat, namelijk dierenbescherming).
Helaas leeft Morran niet meer, maar ik weet zeker dat dit boek een prachtige ode is!
