Inspired by an English coast village

During a trip around the coast of Kent, England, I really got inspired by the atmosphere of these villages near the sea. There's something special with the light, the style of the cottages and of course the beautiful landscape. I made a lot of pictures to capture the light of the sea, and remember the colours of the walls and the doors.

This resulted in a series of three greeting cards, with illustrations of the English coast houses. 
I wanted these illustrations to reflect the atmosphere of the villages with their small streets. I made these illustrations by hand, using black drawing pens. That way I could emphasize the character of the houses, with all those tiny details like flower pots, different types of doors, drainpipes, little tiles, windows and street lights, that all together make the houses unique. I had a lot of fun drawing this! Not only the building style, but also the colours were fascinating for me. Do you see the pastel candy colours on the picture above? I scanned my handmade illustrations, and digitally coloured the prints. I only added some subtle colours to give it that clean atmosphere. The cards are all printed on heavy card stock, and come with a recycled envelope.

Tijdens een tripje naar de kust van Kent, in Engeland, raakte ik geïnspireerd door de sfeer in de dorpjes vlakbij zee. Er is iets bijzonders mee, door het licht, de typische huizen en natuurlijk het mooie landschap. Ik maakte een heleboel foto's om het zeelicht vast te leggen, en te onthouden hoe de kleurige gevels eruit zagen. 

Dit leidde uiteindelijk tot een serie kaarten, met illustraties van deze Engelse huisjes. Ik wilde dat deze kaarten precies de sfeer zouden weergeven van het leven in deze dorpjes vlakbij zee, met z'n smalle straatjes. Ik maakte de tekeningen met de hand, met een zwarte tekenpen. Op die manier kon ik goed het karakter van de huisjes laten zien, met alle betekenisvolle details zoals bloempotjes, vensterbanken, ruitjes en raampjes, de straat, de regenpijpen en de straatlantaarns. Elk huisje werd zo uniek. Dat was erg leuk om te tekenen!

Niet alleen de bouwstijl, maar ook de kleuren waren voor mij interessant als ontwerper. Veel gevels waren in pastelkleuren geschilderd, bijna als snoepjes. De tekeningen heb ik daarom ingescand en digitaal gekleurd, waarbij ik alleen een paar vlakken een kleur meegaf voor een subtiel effect. De drie kaarten zijn gedrukt op extra zwaar papier, dus lekker stevig om in te schrijven, en je krijgt er een mooie gerecyclede envelop bij.
